Obituary for Hilma Brace

Hilma Brace, age 95, went peacefully on the morning of April 7, 2023, to be united with the Lord Jesus on Good Friday. She was a kind hearted woman who quickly made friends wherever she went. Even in the short time she spent in hospice, she grew to care for the generous Hospice Angels providing her with comfort and care.

She was born in Renville, Minnesota on May 2, 1927 to William and Ida Roelofs. She grew up on a very large farm with three brothers and two sisters, later moved to Michigan with friends, and met George Brace, who was widowed with two young boys. On December 28, 1950, they were married and Hilma adopted the boys as her own. They went on to have three more boys and a daughter. In addition, they lost one child early in pregnancy to a miscarriage,

They first met in Grand Rapids, MI then lived in Dorr where they had a farm with goats and chickens. From there, it was on to the Hastings area and finally Thornapple Lake near Nashville. They both had many jobs and worked hard to raise their children. Hilma worked in many factory positions and retired from Flexfab in Hastings.

They were part of the Commission on Aging until George passed in 1994 from cancer. Hilma was lost after losing George, but went on to join Dulcimers (a musical group) and met with their friends to play the music they had enjoyed throughout their married life. She continued to go to church and meet friends, who had become part of her family, and made many more friends through her neighbors.

Hilma had many hobbies. She especially enjoyed puzzles, puzzle books, crocheting blankets for her grandchildren and gardening, both indoor and outdoor.

When covid hit our nation, she was separated from friends and family. She had only her cat, Kelly, and the Lord Jesus as her constant companions, along with a telephone as communication.

She loved people, especially children, and was blessed with a large family and a very long life filled with many memories and much happiness.

Hilma is survived by her brothers Wayne and Harvey Roelofs; sister Mavis Hadder; children Dave (Patti) Brace, Larry (Nikki) Brace, William (Blanch) Brace, Keith (Linda) Brace, Dianne (Bob) Shoup, and James (Karen) Brace; 22 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren; and many adopted family.

She was preceded in death by George, her husband of nearly 44 years; her parents, William and Ida; sister Eleanor; brother Ivan; sisters-in-law Betty and Bev; and grandson Philip.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Nashville United Methodist Church or Eaton County Palliative Care, 2765 S. Cochran, Charlotte, MI 48813.
