Obituary for Dolores Mater

Dolores (Dee) Woodruff Mater, age 91, of Hastings, MI passed away on January 10, 2023 at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids.

Dee was born on September 9, 1931 to William and Genevieve (Tebo) Woodruff, in Hastings, MI.
She spent her early years at Leach Lake and as a young girl the family moved to Hastings. She attended Hastings schools and graduated from Hastings High School with the class of 1949.

She began her working career with E.W. Bliss, eventually becoming an executive secretary. She was with the company for over 42 years before her retirement in 1992.

Dee married the love of her life, Gerald “Doc” Mater on October 1, 1949. They made their home in the Nashville area, where they raised their son Linden, born July 12, 1950. She and Doc enjoyed traveling, playing golf, riding quads, snowmobiling in northern Michigan, winters in Acadia, Florida, and summers at their cottage at Thornapple Lake. They had numerous pet schnauzers over the years, and Dee would take in any stray cat and make it her own. She enjoyed gardening, particularly her flower garden, and with her green thumb possessed the ability to bring any ailing plant back to life.

Following Doc’s death, Dee moved to Florida and made many friends in the 5 years she resided there. Upon her return to Michigan she spent the remainder of her days in Hastings.

Dee is survived by her son Linden (Wendy) Mater, grandchildren Bill and Missy (Terry) Hodges, and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Genevieve Woodruff, her beloved husband Doc, and grandson Chad Mater.

A funeral service will be held Monday, January 16, 2023 at 1:00pm at the Nashville Baptist Church, 312 Phillips Street, Nashville, MI.
