Virginia Burd

Virginia Burd age 83 of Nashville, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family.

Virginia was born on June 4, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland the daughter of the late Howard and Virginia (Kircher) McCall.

She was raised in the Baltimore area and attended local schools. She was twelve When her father was killed. Then she and her mother relocated to Escondido, California. During her high school years, Virginia's mother suffered a broken hip, which forced Virginia to drop out of school at 14 to run the family laundry business.

It was there that she was introduced to a young man serving in the Marine Corps, Mr. Arden Burd. On February 14, 1954 in Escondido, CA. Arden and Virginia were married. They spent a short time in California, before returning to the Nashville area to raise their five children. Virginia did not give up on her education, however, she returned to the classroom with much younger students in order to complete her high school education in 1965.

A short time after Arden retired, the couple took a trip to the Western United States and fell in love with New Mexico. When they returned to Nashville, Arden put the house up for sale, and a day later they began the process of relocating to New Mexico to enjoy their retirement. They attended the First Baptist Church of Carrizozo, NM where Virginia lead the congregational singing and served as choir director. After spending 10 wonderful years there, Virginia wanted to return to Nashville to be closer to family.
The couple had been longtime members of Nashville Baptist Church where they began attending in 1972. Virginia & Arden loved their church and participated in mission trips to Aruba with several other churches to construct new churches on the island. In her later years Virginia was an instrumental part of the church establishing the "prayer chain", serving as the Promoters For Christ president and many other service roles.

In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Scrabble, doing crossword puzzles and reading any mystery novel. She was skilled at crocheting, and won First prize at the New Mexico State fair for her double crochet purple afghan. Virginia also enjoyed her special Pen Pal friend Christian from Scotland. The two friends began writing in the 5th grade and established a special bond through their letters over a 70 year span.

Virginia spent her working career as an Actuary in the insurance industry for over 10 years, retiring in 1981. Throughout the years she also worked at Maple Valley Schools as a Teacher's Aide and a clerk at Kathy’s Crafts.

Virginia was a spectacular Grandmother with her grands often flocking to her home to watch a sporting event or sing some hymns. She never missed any of their recitals or school activities, cheering them on and applauding their performances.
