Obituary for Irene Ames (Roberts)

Irene Marie Ames, age 89, of Hastings, passed away Saturday, April 10, 2021,at Hastings Rehabilitation under the care of Spectrum Hospice in Hastings.
Irene was born in Woodland, on July 13, 1931, the daughter of the late Roy and Virginia (Hoover) Roberts. She attended Lake Odessa Schools, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1949. In 1952, Irene graduated from the School of Nursing at Butterworth Hospital.
She was the wife of the late Russell Ames. Russell and Irene were married on July 11, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodland. They started their lives in Nashville where they raised their family. They celebrated over 60 years of marriage.
Irene worked at Hayes Green Beach Hospital, followed by the Eaton County Medical Nursing Home until 1976. After which, Russell and Irene bought a resort and charter fishing business in Brethren, which they operated together until 1988. After their retirement, the couple began spending their winters together in the Winter Haven, FL area, which they did for 20 years.
Since the passing of her husband in 2013, Irene kept busy with volunteer work. She became a hospice volunteer (member of the Patient-Family Advisory Council for Spectrum Hospital), a food bank volunteer, Treasurer for Woodlawn Condominiums, and First Vice-President of the American Legion Post #45.
She was a proud lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church. In her free time, Irene enjoyed painting. She began taking lessons in 1998; since then she completed over 300 paintings. She was an avid knitter and crocheter, and she loved to sew and read.
She is preceded in death by her parents (Roy & Virginia), her husband (Russell), her son (Randy Ames), and three of her siblings (Gary Roberts, Lee Roberts, and Margene Taylor).
She is survived by her daughter Barbara (John) Spagnuolo of Holt, daughter in law Becky Ames of Grand Rapids; her sisters Eunice Goodemoot & Ruth Ann (Richard) Hamilton; her grandchildren Crista (Phil) Rodriguez, Robert Ames, Jeffrey (Christine) Rodriguez, Michael Ames, Carrie (Matt) Heuvel, Stephanie Spagnuolo; and great grandchildren Abigail Kibby, Onan Kibby, Kaya Ames, Teagan Ames, Taylor Heuvel, Morgan Heuvel, Jaxon Rodriguez, and Mia Rodriguez.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Tuesday, April 13 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville, and again one hour prior to the funeral service beginning at 12 noon. Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM on Wednesday, April 14 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville with Chaplin Michael Allen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hastings Food Pantry or Zion Lutheran Church in Woodland.
