Erika Bailey
Mrs. Erika Bailey, age 39, of Freeport passed away after her courageous battle with cancer, on Thursday, March 25th, 2021 at Pennock Hospital, in Hastings, MI.
Erika was born in Hastings, MI on December 12, 1981, the daughter of David and Sue (Kersjes) Main.
She was raised in the Hastings area and attended local schools graduating from Hastings High School in 2000. Erika had a passion for learning and continued her education attending Davenport University earning her Bachelors Degree in Health Sciences. Erika's educational journey had not ended. She successfully completed her Masters Degree at DeVry University, and was currently working on completing her dissertation, the final step in achieving her PHD. Erika's passion for knowledge was a seamless transition into her career as a college professor at Grand Valley State University. Her dedication to learning could not be stopped. Despite her cancer diagnosis, Erika remained faithful to her students, conducting classes throughout her very difficult treatment schedule, rarely acknowledging her illness to her students.
In 2008 Erika met the love of her life Mr. Todd Bailey, and on June 27th, 2014 the couple was married in his parents back yard, with Todd's brother officiating. The couple made their home together in Freeport where they raised their family together. Erika loved her home, and took tremendous pride in its decor. Christmas was her favorite time of the year, and each room of the house was complete with its own Christmas tree specifically decorated for that room. As a young girl, Erika enjoyed spending time cooking and perfecting family recipes with her Grandma Kersjes. Those family traditions were kept alive in her own kitchen, as she lovingly produced family favorite meals and snacks to ensure each time the family came together there was delicious food for everyone to enjoy, many of which she made from scratch. During the summer months, the family enjoyed camping at Silver Lake and spending the afternoons taking their truck into the dunes.
Erika is survived by her beloved husband Todd, sons Hunter Gould & Lewis Bailey, step daughter, Jewelle Maziarz, her sister, Nicole (Jesse Eaton) Main, brother, Kyle (Rhonda) Main, her parents David & Sue Main, nieces and nephews Kylie, & Patrick Main, Mikalah & Hayden "Bubba" Eaton, and several aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her Uncle Pat Kersjes, Aunt Marcia Kersjes and cousin Gary Kersjes,
Graveside Services were held at Fuller Cemetery at 11:00AM on Monday, March 29th, with Drew Kersjes officiating.
