Caroline Gross

Mrs. Caroline Gross, age 96, of Garyville, Louisiana (formerly from Nashville) passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, on Friday, January 29th, 2021.

Caroline was born in Lennon, MI on February 23, 1924, the daughter of the late James C. and Louise (Palmer) Newman.

Caroline was raised in the Lennon area, and attended local schools graduating from Morris High School in 1944. Caroline was always a very conscientious and hard worker, spending weekends and evening working at the local restaurant during her high school years earning $4.50 per week. While completing her education Caroline took a job at Bendix Manufacturing in Owosso, MI building carburetors for airplanes being used in W.W.II, and was forever proud of the part she was able to play supporting the war effort.

On July 3, 1945 she married Mr. Ernest Gross in Providence RI. The couple returned to Michigan after Ernest finish his time in the United States Navy, establishing their home at Stoney Point, between Hastings and Nashville. A few years later, the couple relocated to the Freeport area where they raised their family together. After Ernest retired from
the E.W. Bliss the couple moved to the Thornapple lake area, where they remained until Ernest passed away in 1998.

Caroline was a devoted wife and mother who's priority always remained focused on the care of her family. Caroline's consistent work ethic followed her throughout her life. In 1967 she began working as a nurses aide at the Barry County Medical Facility, a job which she held for over 13 years.

In 1978 Caroline and Ernest, ventured to Florida to visit their daughter Shirley, and fell in love with the warm climate and sunny weather. They later purchased a home in the Naples area where they wintered for over 13 years together.

Caroline loved spending time in the kitchen baking and decorating cakes for any occasion. In her spare time she also enjoyed word search puzzles, and doing plastic canvas crafts. She was also a Life Member of VFW Post 8260.

Caroline is survived by her daughter Shirley Dexter, her son James (Maria-Veronica) Gross, 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren & 1 great great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Gross, her son Ernest H. Gross, step-son Gordon Gross, brothers William and James Newman, sisters Mary Jordan, Eva English, Elna Marcum, and infant sister Marcelena Delores Newman, grandson Ernest H. Gross, Jr., & great grandson Miles Ernest Dexter.


Funeral Services will be held at The Daniels Funeral Home, Nashville, MI, at 11 AM on Monday, February 8th, 2021 with Pastor Karen Kinney officiating.

The family will receive visitors on Sunday February 7th, 2021 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at The Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.

There will be a time of fellowship luncheon immediately following the funeral service at the Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.

Interment will take place at The Barryville Cemetery in Nashville.
