Obituary for Hughes Leonard

Mr. Leonard Hughes, age 87, of Nashville passed away Monday, May 18th, 2020 at his home surrounded by his beloved family.

Leonard was born in Bellevue, MI on July 20, 1932, the son of the late Max and Lena (Garity) Hughes. He was raised in the Bellevue area and attended local schools.

He was the husband of Marjorie (Lake) Hughes. The couple was married July 13, 1952 and made their home together in the Nashville area. Leonard spent the most of his life as a dairy farmer, in the Barry County area. He loved farming, raising livestock, and working in his garden. Being on the farm often meant learning to improvise when necessary, and Leonard became a master at fixing just about anything.

When Leonard left farming he used his mechanical skills to become a Millwright for Hough Bros. in Sunfield for several years.

During the early 1970's Leonard began competing in Draft Horse Pulling events. As his passion for the sport grew, it became a family affair, which allowed Leonard and his family to travel to horse pulling events throughout Michigan. He was a member of the Michigan Horse Pulling Boat Association for over 40 years and remained active in the sport well into his 70's.

Leonard is survived by his children: Leonard (Juliet) Hughes Jr., Sherry (Steven) Wendorf, Cindy (Herm) VanBelkum, Michael Hughes, his brother Jerold (Janet) Hughes, sister in-law Joann Hughes,12 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his 1st wife Sally (Grey) Hughes, his infant son Perry Max Hughes brothers Raymond, Kenneth, Bernard his sister Laura Ormsbee, and daughter in-law Brenda Hughes.

Graveside Services were held at Hosmer Cemetery at 1 PM on Thursday, May 21st, 2020 with Pastor Jeff Hodges officiating..
