Life Story for Shirley Mater (Fowler)

Shirley Mater (Fowler)
Shirley Mae Mater of Nashville, MI, aged 82, went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 5, 2018. Shirley was born in Grand Rapids, MI, to Rollo and Myrtle (Davan) Fowler. Shirley is survived by her children, Crystal (Mark) Potter, Charles Mater, James (Jeri) Mater, David (Dawn) Mater, and Ann (Helmut) Klett; her brother, Ron (Phyllis) Fowler; her in-laws, John (Lucy) Mater, and Dolores Mater; and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rollo and Myrtle Fowler; her husband of 59 years, Gene Mater; her daughter, Rebecca France; her brother, Jerry Fowler; and her brother-in-law, Gerald (Doc) Mater. Shirley has supported an orphan, Margret Kache Muhindi (Maggie), through IGM for several years.

Children were the joy of her life and she loved spending time with all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as well as all of their friends! The fuller and noisier the house was, the happier she was! She was a wife, mother, and homemaker as well as teaching sewing and cooking in 4-H, a teacher at VBS, leader of children’s church at Nashville Baptist Church, foster parent for numerous children, and involved with Promoters for Christ (PFC), a ladies missionary support group. She was honored as Children’s Church Worker of the Year at NBC, PTA President, and Homemaker of the Year in Barry County. Shirley gave her life to Jesus Christ as a young girl, and has devoted her life in serving and honoring her Lord.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Nashville Baptist Church, 312 Phillips Street. Family and Friends are invited to remain after the service for a luncheon and a time to celebrate Shirley’s life. Stories, photos, and memories are welcome!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nashville Baptist Church or International Gospel Missions.

The family would like to thank the staff of Woodlawn Meadows Retirement Village and Great Lakes Hospice for caring for Shirley.
