Life Story for John Marriott

John Marriott
ohn Marriott

Mr. John Marriott, age 73, of Hastings went to be with his Lord on Friday, December 8th, 2017 at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus, in Grand Rapids, MI.

John was born in Marshall, MI on February 21, 1944, the son of the late Clair and Audrey (Bushre) Marriott.

He was raised in the Bellevue area and attended local schools. The day after John graduated from High School in 1963 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served as a stock clerk, and fire fighter for over 6 years being Honorably discharged in 1968.

He was the husband of Margaretta (Williams) Marriott. In his younger years John enjoyed horse racing. Not just watching, the racing but participating in Harness racing. On his first date with Margaretta, he took her to the horse races and gave her $50 to bet on any horse she wanted. That day, she won $80 on her bet. It wasn't until many years later that Margaretta revealed to John that she actually had placed a $2 bet on every horse running, and that way she knew there was no way she could lose. John & Margaretta where married in Potterville, MI on November 28, 1981. They began their lives in a home they had purchased in Charlotte. The couple enjoyed buying older homes, restoring them to like new condition then selling them. The shared this hobby for many years until settling in Hastings, MI 13 years ago.

John was employed as a Painter at Fisher Body in Lansing for several years, but later become a Union Rep, and toward the end of his career served as a Substance Abuse Counselor, helping fellow employees deal with and overcome drug & alcohol abuse. He retired in 1997 after 32 years of service. While John was serving as a Union Representative at Fisher Body in Lansing, the couple was able to travel each year to Palm Springs, CA for a couple weeks each year while John was there on business. They continued to travel after his retirement, and cherished their trip to Israel with their church group. Most recently traveling long distances become more challenging, they would simply fill a thermos with hot chocolate, and drive around town enjoying the Christmas lights. Their strongest bond, however, was their faith in Jesus Christ; John accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior over 30 years ago, and his Christian walk has been a reflection of that faith.

In his spare time, John loved to be outdoors hunting and fishing. If he could find a stream or river John was fishing! With fly rod and waders, he could be found fishing for trout in the summer and steelheading the spring.

John is survived by his beloved wife Margaretta, three daughters, Joyce (Rocky) Good, Judith (Richard "Willy") Parish, Brenda (Fred) Swanson, two sons Jason (Sherry) Marriott, Daniel (Gwendolyn) Wolfe, his sister, Mary Scott, two brothers, Paul Marriott, Victor Marriott, 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild
