James Merle Pierce

Mr. James Merle Pierce, 85, of Nashville, MI. passed away Thursday, April 27th, 2017 at Bickford Assisted Living, Battle Creek, MI .

James was born in Kalamazoo, MI on December 27, 1931, the son of the late John and Eva (Councell) Pierce. he attended schools in the Marshall area where he completed his education.

James served in the 109th Combat Engineering Batalion of the United States Army from August 1949 until being honorably discharge in December 1952.

He was the widower of Della Pierce. The couple was married Dec. 2, 1955 in Angola,Indiana. They began their lives in Indiana, relocated to Michigan in the late 1968, when James took a job at Clark Equipment. In 1986, they moved to their current residence in Nashville, where they have enjoyed their retirement.

James has a natural talent for repairing things, especially cars. In his younger years, James was spent many of his weekends working as a mechanic on several dirt modified race cars. His passion for racing took he and his family all over the uppermidwest following the dirt modified series. James also enjoyed a day on the lake fishing, whenever time would permit.

James is survived by his daughter, Deborah Crandall, sons Thomas (Nancy) Caswell, John (Cynthia) Pierce, 7 grandchildren Brandon, Star, Larry, Jacob, Jordan and James, and 8 great grandchildren

James was preceded in death by his beloved wife Della, and his son James D. Pierce, brothers Roger & Wayne, and grand daughter Valerie Crandall

Memorial Service will be held at The Daniels Funeral Home, Nashville, MI, at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 with Susan Trowbridge officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the American Legion Honor Guard Post 45 Hastings, MI.


The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the memorial service on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 PM. at The Daniels Funeral Home.

Interment will take place privately at Barryville Cemetery in Nashville.
